After taking a look at the top news stories of the year last week, it's time to reflect on the year in sports for athletes and teams in The Grundy Register coverage area.
  
What follows is a selection of the stories and storylines that stand out from 2018 in chronological order. Here's to everything bigger and better in 2019.
 
The call of a lifetime
GC's Stumberg officiates CFP national championship
 
Those who watched the matchup between Alabama and Georgia in Atlanta at the start of 2018 may have recognized a familiar face on the officiating team.
 
Mike Stumberg of Grundy Center was the center judge for the College Football Playoff's National Championship Game, and reflected on the experience of mediating the biggest college football game of the season.
 
Stumberg is an official in the B1G conference and received the opportunity to be on the officiating team from the supervisor of officials, who needed to assemble the best team of officials to handle such a high-profile game.
 
"It's a reflection of your body of work," Stumberg said. "I was fortunate to be selected."
