AGWSR seizes homecoming victory on last-second FG

ACKLEY – Battered and bruised, the AGWSR football team nonetheless battled to a 45-44 Homecoming victory over Turkey Valley last Friday night in a finish that left the fans in Ackley breathless.
 
AGWSR scored 16 unanswered points over the final 13 minutes of the game, capped by a 24-yard field goal from Luca Fieback with just seconds remaining.
 
"Coach (James) Koop was saying to compete every play no matter what happens," AGWSR quarterback Aaron Roelfs said, "and we stuck together as a team and finished as a team."
 
Liam Stubbe, playing with a virus that made it difficult for him to breathe at times, ran 27 times for 209 yards and four touchdowns for the Cougars, with Aaron Roelfs, who missed last week's game at Don Bosco with a nagging ankle injury still present Friday night, ran 23 times for 86 yards and a score.
 
AGWSR scored the first 14 points of the game on Stubbe touchdown runs, but Turkey Valley answered with 22 consecutive points and went into halftime with a 30-22 lead after stopping AGWSR's offense a yard short of a late score.
 
Turkey Valley pushed their lead to 44-29 by the 1:51 mark of the third quarter.
 
On the ensuing kickoff, however, Alec Stahl ran back the kick 74 yards for a score, sending the AGWSR sideline into a frenzy.
 
With the whole fourth quarter left to go, anything could have happened, but AGWSR's defense stepped forward for three key stops in the final quarter.
