Back again: Lashbrook returning to state

DENVER – AGWSR sophomore Trey Lashbrook claimed his spot at the Class 1A state wrestling tournament, winning the district title in the 120-pound bracket at Saturday's district tournament at the Cyclone Center.

Lashbrook will compete in the second session of the day at Wells Fargo Arena, with 1A wrestlers scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start time on Thursday.

Last year, Lashbrook claimed an eighth-place medal after falling to Denver's Jacob Moore in the seventh-place match, the third time Moore defeated Lashbrook as a freshman.

This year, the two had yet to cross paths, and Lashbrook got the better of Moore in a 7-5 decision to win the title.

Lashbrook won a technical fall over Postville's Caleb Hughes in the semifinal round.

"That tells us he's right on track to where he needs to be," AGWSR coach Chad Gerbracht said. "Trey put himself in good position the entire match and wasn't really in danger throughout that match and he felt pretty good about it."

The first-round opponent for Lashbrook is Underwood's Weston Allen, a freshman with a 38-9 record. Moore is on the other side of Lashbrook's four-wrestler pod, battling WACO's Jonah Clark.

"He had some setbacks last year that he looks to correct this time," Gerbracht said. "He got caught in a spladle that took him out of third and we're going to try to eliminate those kinds of opportunities for his opponents."
