BCLUW board approves Dreamland improvement project

The BCLUW board of education voted to spend almost $40,000 on improvements and repairs to the Dreamland playground in Conrad at its regular meeting on Monday morning.

Hay Construction of Marshalltown submitted a bid not to exceed $39,323, and board member LJ Kopsa, who runs a construction business of his own, questioned the proposal—specifically the plan to use treated lumber—before ultimately voting for it.

“Are we just putting a Band-Aid on it for two years and then deciding in two years that it’s not worth it anymore?” he asked. “I hate to put $40,000 toward filling holes in those boards.”

Board President Beth Neff noted, however, that the playground was a community effort, and she felt that the district owed it to everyone who helped make it a possibility to maintain and improve it. A motion from Brian Feldpausch eventually passed 4-0 (Eric Engle, Shannan Callaway and Adam Probasco were absent). Work on the project is expected to commence this summer.
