BCLUW board hears concerns about concert attendance policy

A concerned parent of a BCLUW student shared his misgivings with the school board about music teacher Bradley Wilson’s policy mandating students to attend concerts or face severe grade penalties during last Wednesday night’s regular meeting.

Justin Lynch, who owns Boulder Contracting and open enrolls his son into the district from Grundy Center, told the board that he does not believe students should be required to attend concerts for a grade if it causes a hardship for them, citing a section of the Iowa code that requires the board of directors to provide transportation by reimbursement or out of pocket.

“There is no precedent or authority that I can see that grants Mr. Wilson this ability to mandate attendance outside of the school day,” Lynch said. “If he has this ability, it’s kind of a slippery slope, and we don’t know where this could stop.”
