BCLUW drama department to present "Harvey"

A popular comedic play known for its 1950 film adaptation starring Jimmy Stewart is coming to the stage at BCLUW High School next Friday and Saturday night.

“Harvey,” a comedy about a man who befriends the titular (and invisible) rabbit as his life unravels and his sanity is questioned, is a more lighthearted alternative to the fall production of “Big Fish.” Director Jackie Stevens has always sought to push her core group of senior actors and challenge them with a variety of scripts.

Ben Paper is Elwood P. Dowd, and Grace Purvis plays Veta, his fed-up sister who wants her lush brother committed to a sanitarium. Doctor Sanderson (Lucas Halverson), however, quickly turns against Veta and comes to suspect her as the crazy one. Before long, multiple people are missing, and chaos ensues.

“In the second act, it’s a big goose chase to try and find Elwood,” Paper said. “It’s a very funny comedy with a lot of funny lines thrown in everywhere.”

In preparing for Harvey, the lead actors hope to show reverence for the classic versions while putting a modern twist on a timeless story.
