BCLUW drama department to present "State Fair"

This year’s fall musical hits close to home—literally—for the BCLUW actors performing in it. “State Fair,” the Rodgers and Hammerstein production later adapted on Broadway in the 1990s, is set just about an hour down the road in Des Moines, where a farm family embarks on a quest for love and blue ribbons at the famous Iowa event.

The show follows the Frake clan—Abel (Lucas Halverson), his wife Melissa (Lauren Mosher) and their two children, Margy (Abby Feldpausch) and Wayne (Ben Paper)—as they attend the 1946 Iowa State Fair. Abel shows a boar in the grand sweepstakes, and Melissa competes with her mincemeat and sweet pickles. Wayne and Margy, meanwhile, have their minds on love interests both new and old.

“And then I meet this lovely girl named Emily. Oh, she blows up my world. It’s fascinating,” Paper said. “It’s definitely a humorous and heartwarming experience for everyone.”

One of the biggest advantages of this year’s show is the familiarity factor: Mosher and her sister Leah, who are both prominently featured and are no strangers to the state fair themselves, have been watching the movie version since they were young kids.
