When I sit down with three BCLUW High School students who are involved with writing and creating “The Comet Community,” a new monthly online newspaper in its first year of publication, on Monday, I had to get the most pressing, important question out of the way first: are you guys trying to compete with me?

“Yes,” senior Samantha Ubben said with a laugh.

All jokes aside, the nascent project, the brainchild of teachers Brennan Acton and Sue Runge, has given students the opportunity to learn more about their classmates, disseminate important information and keep readers up to date on what’s going on in the district.

Some cornerstones of the publication include student of the week, sports previews and other activities like drama, speech and music. A total of five writers—Ubben, Brad Barkema, Jenna Willett, Esme Ralston and Kaylee Goecke—are considered the “staff,” but anyone can submit articles.
