BCLUW's Barkema on 1A all-state 1st team

BCLUW's Brad Barkema was named to the first team of the Class 1A all-state team issues by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association on Tuesday morning.
 
Barkema leads a trio of local players receiving all-state recognition. AGWSR senior Liam Stubbe and Gladbrook-Reinbeck sophomore Tyler Tscherter received third-team spots.
 
In his senior season at catcher with the Comets, Barkema batted .412 with 11 doubles and 20 runs batted in, with an on-base percentage of .514. Barkema was a third-team selection last season.
 
Stubbe threw 45 and one-third innings on the mound for AGWSR this season. He struck out 64 batters with eight walks, allowing 16 earned runs on 49 hits. Stubbe also batted .417 for the Cougars, with five doubles, two home runs, 14 runs batted in and nine stolen bases.
 
Tscherter led the Rebels with a .462 batting average, in addition to 10 doubles, two home runs and 20 runs batted in with 17 stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .535. He was G-R's most prolific pitcher, throwing 52 innings with 10 earned runs allowed, striking out 82 opponents and issuing 20 walks.
