Brad Barkema, a junior on the BCLUW baseball team, was selected to the third team of the Class 2A all-state baseball team, as selected by the Iowa Newspaper Association, in all-state teams released Tuesday.
Barkema, chosen as a catcher, batted .417 for the Comets. He led the team in doubles (14), home runs (3), on-base percentage (.510), slugging percentage (.714) and tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 14. He also drove in 27 runs, the third-best total on the team.
In 12 1/3 innings on the mound, Barkema was 1-1, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and striking out 15 with four walks.
Barkema was a first-team All-Central District pick this year at catcher and was a unanimous first-team selection at catcher on the NICL West All-Conference Team.
