GCGR girls 3rd in team race

REINBECK – Mud and rain soaked competitors at the North Iowa Cedar League cross country meet in Reinbeck on Saturday.

But even if it weighed him down, BCLUW's Caleb Silver didn't let the mushy conditions get into his head.

Silver kept his focus and stuck to the gameplan, gaining momentum as the race went on to run to a runner-up finish at the conference meet at Oakleaf Country Club.

The BCLUW junior finished the course in 17:17, trailing Union's Lake LeBahn who won the race in 16:48.

"You gotta think you can do it," Silver said. "You come here thinking the mud's not going to change anything, just run the race, be happy to be here, be happy to get an opportunity to run."

BCLUW finished with a 194 team score, behind Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck which finished with a 166 team score.

Caleb Silver and GCGR's Derek Ciddio (10th, 18:01) were first team all-conference members based on their Saturday finish.

On the girls' side, GCGR was the top area team with a 108 team score for third place, trailing Hudson (60) and Denver (85). GCGR had four all-conference runners, led by first-teamer. Lily Ehlers, who was fourth in 20:53. Reegan Zinkula and Cora Saak finished 14th and 15th in 21:35 and 21:45, respectively, for second-team honors and Shelby Rivera was an honorable mention recipient after her 22nd-place run in 22:25.

"The girls squad has really been working hard as a group to make some noise during this part of the season," McQuillen said. "I don't think we have reached our max yet, but the team as a whole is running very well. I was very happy with Cora and Shelby's performances, they ran extremely well and really pushed through the conditions to run one of their best races of the season."

D-NH was ninth in the team standings with a 178 team score, led by honorable mention all-conference runner Ellie Foster in 26th place in 22:33. Jadyn Bennett just missed out on the all-conference team with a 31st place finish in 22:57.
