Be brave bags: local elementary students create gift bags for hospitalized kids

It’s the season of giving, and students at Grundy Center Elementary are doing their part to help others by putting together “Be Brave Bags” which will be handed out to kids being treated at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

GC Elementary Resource Teacher Katie Lechtenberg is leading a group of 13 students in first through fourth grade on the project after her own daughter received a bag during a recent hospital stay. The bag was filled with goodies such as a toothbrush, comb, toys, coloring books and crayons and more.

“My daughter had received a Brave Bag after she had surgery for her tonsils at a Waterloo hospital, and that meant so much to us,” she said. “It was great as a parent because you don’t have to worry about going home to get things like a toothbrush or socks, and the toys and coloring books kept her busy, and kept her mind off of everything. She didn’t complain once while we were there because she was so entertained and happy about the bag she got.”
