City of GC makes changes to recycling program

Across the globe, there’s a transformation underway in the recycling sector caused by the drop in value for recyclable goods. Many towns and cities across the nation are being forced to re-evaluate their current recycling programs or raise rates, as it’s not always financially viable to continue recycling as it was done in the past.

Here in Grundy Center, the city has already had to close the recycling center - which was located across from the ambulance department/fire station - and Public Works Director Dan Bangasser says a raise in recycling rates will most likely come after the first of the new year.

“The market for recyclables isn’t very good right now,” Bangasser said. “Where you used to get paid for sending in recyclables, now we are paying just to have someone take them. So far, we’ve been able to absorb the cost, but if we’re going to keep the recycling program going, there’s most likely going to be a rate increase sometime after the new year.”
