REINBECK – Currently, the City of Reinbeck is planning work on the next phase of a multi-phase project that would connect areas of Elmwood Park with sidewalks, making the park more easily accessible by foot.
“We want to make our park area more accessible to everyone, and these new sidewalks will be handicap accessible, so even elderly residents in a walker or wheelchair can get around,” said City Assistant Dana Schoenbeck. “We just want to get people outside, and have them enjoy the park or the fitness trail area.”
Already, the City has installed sidewalks through part of the park, and now the plan is to add a sidewalk to connect the tennis courts to the pool area and baseball field.
City Administrator Julie Wilkertson said work will begin on that in early July, and would be finished in a couple of weeks.
There are still several areas where the City plans to add sidewalks sometime in the future, including the fitness trail area, but Wilkertson said the project is being taken one step at a time.
She estimated that in the next three to five years, the sidewalk expansion will be completed, and all parts of the park will be easily accessible by foot. Until then, the city is still accepting donations for the project, Wilkertson said.
Another recent project to improve the park includes the addition of a new shelter house, which has been installed near the little league baseball diamonds. This shelter was built using funds generously donated to the park by Gleo McCommons.
City Assistant Schoenbeck said the new shelter house is a great addition to the park, especially with the Fourth of July just around the corner.
