GRUNDY CENTER – Todd Ayers has fond memories of growing up watching Grundy Center wrestling.

The 1985 graduate was in the gym at a young age, and eventually he'd be the one on the mat in Grundy Center High School. Ayers was a four-year letterwinner, two-time district qualifier and conference champion, and did some junior high coaching for the old Tri-County program that, up until earlier this decade, unified Grundy Center and BCLUW.

On Friday, Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center hosted a junior varsity tournament in the Grundy Center High School gym, the first time high school wrestlers have battled in the gym in years.

"It's good for kids to get a chance to see it in the high school gym," Ayers said. "I remember the stands were always packed back in the mid-70s and I'm glad to see it come back here."
