JEWELL -Eyeing a possible winner-take-all fifth game, the BCLUW volleyball team finished the fourth set with a flurry and captured a Class 2A Region 4 semi-final match over Woodward-Granger here Thursday.

The Comets netted games one and two 25-23, stumbled in the third game 16-25, rallied to win game four 25-22 and celebrate a first-ever regional final berth.

Down 21-15 in the fourth, BCLUW coach Kristen Garber called timeout in an attempt to break the Hawks’ momentum. It worked as the Comets closed the game and match on a 10-1 run.

“I told them to quit tipping and hit the ball. They blocked some of our hits but we had to keep attacking. They were not going to let the ball hit the ground on those tips,” said Garber.

She added, “I never like game five, but I really didn’t like the thought of game five tonight. It can just go anywhere.”

A school-record 26th win advanced BCLUW (26-11) to the 2A Region 4 Final on Tuesday in Earlham against seventh-ranked Tri-Center (30-7). The winner earns a spot at the state tournament.

Sophomore Lizzie Garber sparked the Comets’ comeback as she rifled a kill down the sideline, and then at the serving stripe had four service points with two aces – one that hit the net and fell over and one landing on the back line – to pull within 21-20.

After a W-G point, BCLUW booked the final five points including a pair of Jade Hammers kills around a Madison Ubben service ace that again hit the net and fell over for the final three points.
