Confident Comets thump Falcons in district opener

Two summers ago on the same field—and with many of the same BCLUW players involved—the fourth-ranked Comets opened postseason play against an upstart Aplington-Parkersburg entering the contest with just six wins. The Falcons shocked everyone in attendance with a 1-0 upset, and it was the final game BCLUW played before legendary skipper Dave Lee rejoined as head coach the following year.

“We mentioned that this morning,” Lee admitted after last Wednesday night’s rematch. “Upsets happen when somebody’s not ready to play, and that’s essentially it.”

The outcome of this game could not have been a more complete and utter role reversal, as the 12th ranked Comets—fresh off of a conference clinching victory over West Marshall two days prior—slugged their way to a breezy three-inning 16-0 win and a date with South Hamilton in a Class 2A regional semifinal.

Due to its status as the “away” team despite being on its home field and possessing the superior record, BCLUW (28-8, 11-1) wasted no time getting on the board: senior Leah Yantis, who finished 4-for-4, singled off the foot of A-P pitcher Jersey Rosteck, and Samantha Ubben drove in courtesy runner Parker Scurr two batters later. Easton Swanson brought home two more runs with a bunt, and Ubben took the mound with a built-in four run cushion.

Not that she needed it. Ubben fanned four of the six batters she faced, and her squad added seven more runs in the second after batting around the order in the first. Yantis, Ubben and Lauren Anderson each doubled. Jordyn Beeghly drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Jenna Willett bunted one home. Heading into the final frame, BCLUW held an 11-0 lead.
