Dike council discusses possibility of security cameras around town

DIKE – A number of criminal incidences that occurred this summer have prompted the Dike city council to discuss the possibility of installing security cameras around key points in town.
Council member Chad Cutsforth, who brought the idea to the council for discussion, said that after the attempted child abductions that happened around Iowa this summer, including one in Dike, it might be worth considering some sort of security camera system for situations such as these.
“It’s not like we have a crime problem around here, because we really don’t, but having cameras like this in case anything were to happen again, I think we can all agree it would be good to have them this time,” he said. “And hopefully, [if the city decided to install cameras] they would stop stuff like this from happening in the first place.”
Cutsworth added that it’s basically impossible for the city to have a police officer around 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to monitor everything that goes on, and that the cameras would be a relatively low cost way to solve that problem.
According to Mayor Mike Soppe, the council discussed three key points in town where there may be a need for cameras. These three points would be the main access roads into town: east and west on Highway 20 and south on T55.
