Former Carol's building back up for rent

Though details are currently sparse, the building that was planned to be the future home of two restaurants in Conrad is back up for rent as the community looks for another eatery to fill the void that Carol’s Restaurant and Bakery left with its departure at the end of 2014.

Shiner Development of Conrad purchased the building and utilized a $75,000 Challenge Iowa grant to remodel it and construct four new apartments last year, and the initial plan was to split the large facility in half and share it between two new restaurants: Blaine’s on Main, which was to be owned by Conrad’s own Blaine Fisher and serve breakfast and lunch, and Maria’s Tacos, an established authentic Mexican restaurant based in Marshalltown. According to Fisher’s mother Kandy, Blaine’s on Main will still be open sometime in the future, but the family is currently exploring other options for a location.

“We are just trying to put (Blaine) into the right economical position that will allow him to succeed and get a good start,” she said.
