Former Grundy Center High School baseball coach Jason Burroughs, who led the Spartans for the last three seasons, faces a felony count of Domestic Abuse Assault after an alleged strangulation incident on September 18.

According to a criminal complaint, Burroughs, 40, grabbed and contorted the alleged victim’s arm causing bodily injury, grabbed her by the throat, and strangled her at a residence in Grundy Center. He faces additional charges of Child Endangerment—Bodily Injury for tackling a minor female to the ground and two counts of Obstruction of Emergency Communications, as he allegedly attempted to stop the victims from calling 911.

Burroughs was arrested by the Grundy Center Police Department the following day and released after posting a $500 bond for the Child Endangerment charge. He has since relocated to Traer and has been served a no-contact order with the alleged victims.

An initial appearance was scheduled for September 25 at 1:30 p.m., and a trial date has not yet been set. Officer Justin Fox, who made the arrest, could not be reached for immediate comment.

At press time, Burroughs’s name was still listed on the Grundy Center school website as the head baseball coach, though it was widely believed after last season—when the Spartans finished 1-20—that he would not return to the post. Superintendent Jerry Schutz confirmed during a phone interview that Burroughs, who is not a district employee, resigned months before any of the allegations had surfaced.
