Freese joins Grundy County as newest deputy

A Stout native is coming home to join the sheriff’s office as a deputy, and, to hear Cody Freese tell it, he always wanted it to end up this way.

“It was always my plan to end up back down there,” said Freese, who worked as a part-time dispatcher and jailer for Grundy County from 2003 to 2012 and interned here after his first year at Hawkeye Community College. “(But) that’s not an agency that hires a lot because they have good officers that stay there long term.”

After almost five years as an officer with the Sumner Police Department, Freese—a 2002 Dike-New Hartford graduate—will begin his new duties on Monday, July 24. During his previous tenure with Grundy County, Freese got to know the staff quite well, and according to Sheriff Rick Penning, his hiring will make the transition process a whole lot smoother.

“Cody should be a very valuable employee because he has previously worked with this office. He’s very good with computers. He knows the operations of the office and the geographic outlay of the county,” Penning said. “He’s well experienced in the smaller rural areas, so this should be a natural fit.”
