GRUNDY CENTER - With shining chrome and engines revving, downtown Grundy Center came to life last Thursday evening as visitors flocked around the courthouse square for the first ever Main Street Grundy Center Car Cruise and Concert.
Dozens of classic and vintage car collectors from Grundy Center, Conrad and Waterloo Car Clubs lined up around the courthouse to show off their hot rods.
Leonard Truax of Waterloo was one of many classic car enthusiasts who showed off his ride - a pristine 1965 Galaxie 500 named “White Lightning.”
Truax says he’s always enjoyed classic cars because of the nostalgia they bring with.
“[This type of car] was my first new car I bought when I got out of the service,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of cars since then. I bought this one a few years ago because I wanted one that was just like my first car. There’s a lot of good memories it brings back.”
Incidentally, Truax purchased the car from another local car enthusiast - Dave Maxson of Grundy Center.
Maxson says he’s always loved cars - especially vintage and classic cars.
“I’ve always loved cars; I’ve probably owned over 200 of them,” Maxson said. “I used to race back in the day; I started racing late models when I as 18 years old.”
Truax and Maxson are old friends, and they said they enjoyed the Car Show in downtown Grundy Center; where they happened to see each other for the first time in many years, catching up about cars and swapping stories.
