A Grundy Center man faces a felony charge after a possible road rage incident in which he is accused of deliberately backing into one of the city’s Municipal Utilities vehicles and causing over $1,000 in damage.

Steven Brent Jones, age 57, has been charged with one count of Second Degree Criminal Mischief, a Class D felony, for his role in an August 4 incident on the 700 block of Sixth Street. According to a criminal complaint, a witness saw Jones pull his vehicle up from behind a parked Municipal Utilities pickup, drive past it, stop his vehicle and proceed to back into the driver’s side door, causing damages. The witness then alleges that Jones hit another vehicle and drove away, and he is facing an additional charge of Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

Jones had been arrested the day before the incident at his home on a Black Hawk County warrant for Violation of a No-Contact Order, and the GCPD arrested him on the criminal mischief charges on August 6, also in Grundy Center. He was released on a promise to appear. Grundy Center Police Chief Doug Frost had not responded to a request for comment at press time.

UPDATE: As of Wednesday, Jones is being held without bond in the Black Hawk County Jail until his trial there, which is scheduled for October 2.
