GC, A-P will proceed with shared superintendent search

During a brief special meeting on Monday afternoon, the Grundy Center School Board voted unanimously to move forward with the search for a shared superintendent with the Aplington-Parkersburg School District.

After A-P superintendent Jon Thompson announced his retirement at the end of the school year, he contacted the Grundy Center School Board to discuss the possibility of sharing a superintendent between the two schools - which was detailed in a story in last week’s edition of The Grundy Register.

The discussion prompted a meeting between representatives of the Grundy Center School Board and representatives of the Aplington-Parkersburg School Board, who both seem to favor the proposal.
Grundy Center Superintendent Neil Mullen said he is very supportive of this opportunity for the district, and said he’s willing to retire early if the two boards can find a suitable candidate.

“I believe this is the best option for both districts, and the timing is perfect,” Mullen said. “I’m only here short-term, and that was known from the start, so with Jon retiring now, the opportunity for the two schools to share a superintendent might never be this convenient again. Sure, it may be a trade off to not have a full time superintendent, but for the financial positions of both schools it’s the best option.”
