GC Public Health teaches local students about safety

GRUNDY CENTER – One of the many tasks of the Grundy County Public Health Department is education.
Grundy County Public Health Educator Katie Thornton-Lang spends her time planning and coordinating various presentations and educational classes on health and safety, which she conducts all around the county for everyone, young or old.
This winter, Thornton-Lang has spent much of her time visiting elementary schools around the county to teach local students about health and safety.
One of her most recent programs was held at the Grundy Center Elementary School last Wednesday, where she presented her ‘4 Seasons of Safety’ program.
The 4 Seasons of Safety program provides children with seasonal safety tips for winter, spring, summer and fall, with various topics for the proposed season.
In the fall, Thornton-Lang talked about Playground Safety, Safe Routes for Schools, and Stranger Danger. The students practiced how to be safe in all these areas, and they discussed what they knew about each of these safety topics.
For the most recent program on Winter Safety, she talked about the proper gear to wear to avoid getting frostbite (coats, hats, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.), winter tools to use to keep us all safe (shovels, snow plows and snow blowers, etc.), and how to tell if it is safe to go outside with the temperature and wind chill.
