GC school board reviews possible expansion at elementary building

GRUNDY CENTER - Since last October, the Grundy Center School Board has been discussing a possible expansion project at the elementary school that would create enough space to bring the fifth grade students back into the elementary building from the secondary building.

In April, the board hired StruXture Architects - now ISG Architecture - to sketch up some potential concepts for the addition, which would be located at the south side of the building.

Superintendent Neil Mullen and Elementary Principal Brian Sammons have been working with the architects since then to guide the planning stages.

At last Wednesday’s meeting, school board members reviewed the most recently submitted plans from ISG, but took no action.

“What we really want is something that accomplishes our goal of having the additional classrooms added and a fire escape on the second floor,” Mullen said. “With the plans we just got back, the cost is a little higher than expected, and there’s still some things on there we’d like to take a closer look at.”

The proposed plans submitted by ISG show a total project cost of $1,259,375 for the addition, which includes classroom space on the first floor, and storage/future classroom space on the second floor of the addition, which would be connected to the existing elementary building through a corridor.

Mullen says there are still some tweaks he and Sammons and the board would like to see made with the plans before they move forward with anything.
