GC Special Olympics team advances in competition

On Saturday afternoon, four student athletes from the Grundy Center School District took part in a basketball competition for the Northeast Iowa Special Olympics, with each of the students placing first in their division - meaning the whole team will now advance to state in March.

“The students are beyond excited and you could see the excitement beaming from them even days after the competition,” said Sarah Dier, GC Special Olympics Coach and Instructor. “I am very proud of each of them, how hard they have worked to advance to state, and also how the whole Grundy Center Special Olympics team individually advanced to state this time. I saw how the athletes helped cheer on other school athletes and I was very proud of them for this. Everyone was there to have fun, be a part of something, and to play ball.”

The Grundy Center team includes: Robbie Bischoff, Emily Craig, Jamie Hindman and Josie Van Nice.

Each student placed first in their division in either one or more of the following categories: spot shot, basketball shoot and dribble. Now, the team will be advancing to the state competition in Iowa City on March 16.
