REINBECK – The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls soccer team is off to a 3-0 start after wins over Waterloo Columbus, Grand View Christian and Cedar Valley Christian/Alburnett.

GC/G-R, ranked No. 13 in Class 1A in the preseason rankings from the IGHSAU, defeated No. 8 Waterloo Columbus 1-0 in a double-overtime thriller in Waterloo on Tuesday, April 2 and poured it on the Thunder, 10-0, in Reinbeck on Friday, April 5. GC/G-R defeated CVC/Alburnett 7-0 on Tuesday.

The win over the Sailors was a load off the shoulders for GC/G-R's big senior class.

"We haven't been able to beat them in our careers," GC/G-R senior Maddie McMartin said. "We wanted to play as tough as we could and put more shots on goal than we did last year against them and that helped a lot."

McMartin scored the golden goal against the Sailors in the second overtime when Belen Ellenberger's shot deflected off a Columbus defender. Carsen Hamann made two saves in net for GC/G-R, including a key save at the end of the first overtime.

"We had enough speed on the outside that we tried to play outside in and go from there," GC/G-R head coach Aaron Mara said. "We had to keep shooting and the shot output was great and we just had the right ball at the right time and Carsen made a couple of good saves at the right time."
