GCPD will amp up law enforcement for Memorial Day weekend

GRUNDY CENTER – Each year, Memorial Day weekend kicks off the busy summer season as families pack up their cars and hit the road for a weekend of fun.
But, with a higher number of drivers on the road during the holiday season, there is an inevitable increase in everything from minor traffic violations to fatal accidents, says Grundy Center Police Officer Kyle Waugh.
In order to counter this, police departments across the state – including the Grundy Center Police Department – will be taking part in STEP (the Special Traffic Enforcement Program), organized by the Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.
As part of this program, the GCPD will be increasing patrol during the busy Memorial Day Weekend and cracking down on all violations, even minor things like out of date tags, or tail-lights that might be out, Waugh said.
"You always see an increase in traffic violations around the holiday season, because people get careless,” Waugh said. “So, we’re really going to be cracking down on things like seatbelts, speeding, and even smaller things we might not normally stop people for. Sometimes, even these simple things like having a tail light out could cause an accident.”
