Grundy Center hires new superintendent

GRUNDY CENTER – During a special meeting last week, the Grundy Center School Board approved the hiring of a new superintendent, Neil Mullen, who will take the reigns from his predecessor Jerry Schutz at the beginning of March.

A veteran in the area of education, Mullen has experience in all levels, kindergarten through college, as both a teacher and administrator.

He began his teaching career at North Mahaska, where he taught Business Ed and Physical Ed for five years, then spent three years at LaPorte City Elementary as a Physical Ed teacher and coach. After that, he moved into administration, and spent six years as a principal at Union High School, and another 10 years as a principal in that district.

Most recently, Mullen spent 11 years as a superintendent at the Union School District, and also held a position as Supervisor of Student Teachers for Iowa State University.

“I retired as a superintendent at Union, and I had the opportunity to pass the position on to a great leader within the district,” Mullen said. “When the job opened up in Grundy, I got a call from a friend who thought it would be a great fit for me. I was very excited after I met with the school board; they’re very enthusiastic and cohesive about moving the district forward, and I’m looking forward to helping with that.”

Mullen says he knows people in the area who speak very highly of the community, the school, the students, staff and administration, and that he’s looking forward to developing relationships within the school and the community.
