A helping hand: Wellsburg residents raise money, gather supplies for Marshalltown tornado victims

WELLSBURG - Residents of Wellsburg lent a helping hand to neighbors over in Marshalltown after an EF3 tornado ripped through the city last month, devastating much in its path.

Coming together, residents and local Wellsburg organizations put together a Rally for Marshalltown, collecting items in a donation drive, and raising money through a fundraiser dinner sponsored by People’s Savings Bank and the Wellsburg Community Club Board.

Over 150 people attended the fundraiser dinner earlier this month, and along with other monetary donations dropped off, the groups raised $2,675 for the Rebuild Marshalltown Fund. The groups also packed a truck full of supplies and other items to be donated to the UAW and House of Compassion in Marshalltown.

Alyce Johnson, an employee of People’s Savings Bank that helped with the Rally for Marshalltown, says the bank has always been willing to help out with different causes, but it was citizens of the community that really pushed to make this Rally possible.

“[Initially,] local resident Jenna Jones approached the Wellsburg Community Club Board about the idea of doing a drive for Marshalltown,” Johnson said. “Peoples Savings Bank has always been willing to help out with almost any fundraiser or event the Community Club holds, so naturally both Jenna and the community club reached out to the bank to see if they wanted to help participate. Honestly none of this would've been possible without Jenna's initial push to help."
