Hometown heroes: Grundy Center comes together to help fellow Iowans during blizzard

In a true show of character, the community of Grundy Center came together on Sunday to help out fellow Iowans who became stranded in town during blizzard conditions.

During a stretch of nine hours on Sunday, the state closed down Highway 14 between Grundy Center and Parkersburg after 50-mph winds caused heavy drifting and white out conditions, which made the road dangerous and impassible.

Grundy Center Police Department Officer Alissa Loew, who was on duty Sunday, says the DOT asked the GCPD to block travelers from entering Highway 14 after they closed the road. According to reports, a number of vehicles became stuck on Highway 14, preventing the plows from clearing the road until tow trucks could come in to remove the vehicles.

Meanwhile, it was all hands on deck as the GCPD called in officers and reserve officers, who teamed up with the Grundy Center Fire Department and Public Works Department to block the road and redirect traffic to the hotel, Casey’s General Store and Pizza Hut, which were all open during Sunday’s storm.

As the hotel was quickly filled to capacity, the city opened the Community Center to host the overflow of people looking for a warm spot to rest.
