A lesson in giving: Local elementary students donate gift bags to hospitalized kids

A group of local elementary students learned that you’re never too young to make an impact or to help others.
Since October, a group of 13 students in GC Elementary Resource Teacher Katie Lechtenberg’s class have been hard at work on creating “Be Brave Bags” which will be given to fellow kids who visit the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Emergency Unit.
 
The bags are filled with goodies such as coloring books and crayons, stickers, toothbrushes and combs, and anything else a youngster might need or want when they end up in the hospital.
 
Lechtenberg was inspired to lead the kids on the project after her own daughter received a bag during a recent hospital stay.
 
“My daughter had received a Brave Bag after she had surgery for her tonsils at a Waterloo hospital, and that meant so much to us,” she said. “It was great as a parent because you don’t have to worry about going home to get things like a toothbrush or socks, and the toys and coloring books kept her busy, and kept her mind off of everything. She didn’t complain once while we were there because she was so entertained and happy about the bag she got.”
