After over 30 years of teaching in the Grundy Center Community School District, K-4 music instructor Bev Dirks is ready to leave the halls of Grundy Center Elementary for good and enter retirement.

When Dirks first came to Grundy Center in 1984, freshly graduated from Simpson College with a degree in musical education, she didn’t know there was even a job opening at the school.

“I came here on whim to play golf with somebody and they said, ‘We have an opening for an elementary position and you look qualified,’ so I thought, well I’ll apply for the job,” she said. “And here I am, I never left.”

Since then, Dirks has taught students of all ages, in every building.

For 27 years, she taught the beginning band program to fifth and sixth graders. Currently she teaches K-4 vocal, but she still likes to use instruments such as xylophones and percussions to teach the younger students about music.
