Manure spill reported north of Wellsburg

A tractor and honey wagon with a load capacity of 9,000 gallons tipped over and spilled a substantial amount of liquid manure on a gravel road north of Wellsburg last week, but a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) official told The Grundy Register that fines or other penalties against the applicator are unlikely.

The incident occurred on October 26 near the middle fork of South Beaver Creek, and Carl Berg of the DNR’s Mason City field office reported that none of the manure reached the waterway. Berg added that the applicator belonged to Reinbeck-based Nick Strohbehn Farms, but he did not disclose the identity of the driver. The parties responsible for the spill are required to clean up the contaminated soil and remove the manure from the road ditch.
