HOLLAND – Last week, The Mill convenience store made a donation of $1,000 to both the Grundy Center Fire Department, and the Holland Fire Department.
Manager Larry Huisman says The Mill is trying to focus more on giving back, particularly to non-profit organizations and services like the fire department that help others.
“We’re trying to focus on non-profit organizations because we see the need out there for a lot of different areas,” he said.
Huisman says organizations around the community can submit projects they’re looking to help fund, and The Mill’s Board of Directors will look at the projects and choose recipients for donations.
So far this year, along with the local fire department donations, The Mill has also donated to the Little Rebels Learning Center in Reinbeck, to help with the planned expansion project.
With the recent donation to the Grundy Center Fire Department, Fire Chief Nathan Kappel says his department will use the funds to help purchase a skid unit – a mounted fire fighting apparatus complete with medical kit – for the department’s ATV.
Kappel says this unit will be mounted on the department’s ATV and used in scenarios when a larger truck can’t be used.
"We can use this when there’s a grassfire or something like that, or any other emergency where we can’t get a regular vehicle to the area, like out in a field or on the trail,” he said.
