Monday roundup: AGWSR baseball takes down Rebels

   The AGWSR baseball team defeated Gladbrook-Reinbeck 6-3 in Reinbeck on Monday to move into third place in the NICL West standings.
   Luke Starr struck out 12 batters and allowed just one hit in five shutout innings as the Cougars’ starter. Matt Pfaltzgraff led a balanced AGWSR offensive effort with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including a double, and a run batted in.
   Joe Smoldt had two of G-R’s three hits on the night, driving in two RBIs. Tyler Tscherter had a stolen base and scored twice with G-R’s other hit of the night.
   AGWSR (5-5, 4-4 NICL West) scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Rebels (6-6, 3-4) scored a run in the sixth and two in the seventh but couldn’t catch the Cougars, winners of four of their last five conference games.
Baseball
D-NH SWEEPS WAPSIE VALLEY: The Wolverines won 4-3 in Game 1 and 9-5 in Game 2, improving to 17-3 overall and 13-1 atop the North Iowa Cedar League East Division. Ethan Weichers hit three home runs and had five RBIs total.
   D-NH clinched Game 1 after Trent Johnson took a leadoff walk and then advanced to third after the Warriors committed an error attempting to catch Johnson stealing second. Weichers hit a grounder back to the mound but the throw home wasn’t in time as Johnson charged in to score the winning run.
BCLUW 11, SOUTH HARDIN 2: The Comets improved to 6-2 in the NICL West with the victory over the Tigers in Eldora. BCLUW (10-8, 6-2 NICL West) took advantage of 14 walks issued by South Hardin pitching.
WEST MARSHALL 10, GRUNDY CENTER 0 (5 INNINGS): The Spartans (1-15, 1-7 NICL West) were held to three hits by the conference-leading Trojans in the game at State Center.
 
Softball
BCLUW 14, SOUTH HARDIN 0 (5 INNINGS): Jordyn Beeghly was 3 for 4 with a triple and three runs batted in as the Comets bashed the Tigers in Eldora. Jenna Willet and Kate Goecke also collected a pair of hits for 2A No. 15 BCLUW (18-7, 7-1 NICL West) and Samantha Ubben added two RBIs for the Comets.
AGWSR 17, GLADBROOK-REINBECK 1 (3 INNINGS): Addi Johnson and Rachel Sicard hit home runs for the 1A No. 5 Cougars in the rout of the Rebels in Gladbrook. Ali Gerbracht led the Cougars (17-4, 6-2 NICL West) with three runs batted in and Sicard and Johnson added two RBIs each.
WEST MARSHALL 12, GRUNDY CENTER 0 (4 INNINGS): The Spartans (5-12, 2-6 NICL West) only mustered one hit off Trojans starter Kallie Malloy in the shortened game in State Center. Malloy also drove in three runs to lead West Marshall.
WAPSIE VALLEY 7-7, DIKE-NEW HARTFORD 2-2: The Warriors earned the sweep in Dike on Monday night. D-NH (1-15, 0-10) was as close as 3-2 in the second game until Wapsie Valley put up four runs in the seventh inning to provide some cushion for starter Anna Sauerbrie.
