A new development at the Iowa DOT shed on the north edge of Grundy Center has many residents and passersby curious about what’s being built on the property.

According to Iowa DOT representatives, the large, 410-foot tall radio tower is being built by Motorola and will be utilized for radio communication by emergency service agencies across the state.

Mike Harvey, Director of Support Services with the Iowa DOT Operations and Finance division, says the new radio tower is one of around 90 located across the state.

“The tower is part of a statewide system, not just for the DOT, but for all emergency responder type departments that want to use it,” Harvey said. “This could be the Sheriff’s department, police department, fire departments, and even utilities.”

Harvey says the DOT is supplying the land at the Grundy Center DOT maintenance shed for Motorola to build the tower, but that Motorola will is responsible for constructing the unit and maintaining it for the next 10 years.
