Neighbor will purchase, clean up Risse property in Fern

Grundy County Sanitarian Carie Sager presented some encouraging news during Monday morning’s board of supervisors meeting, reporting that Fern resident Greg Melcher is planning to buy a longtime nuisance property from neighbor Greg Risse and clean it up himself.

Risse’s home—and his history of legal issues—were the subject of a story in the May 10 Grundy Register after Sager cited him and attempted to abate the nuisance then, but progress has been slow-moving since. He was given until September 1 before the county would take further action.

According to Sager, Melcher hopes to take possession immediately, and he plans to tear down the house, remove the septic tank and clear out any other remaining debris. Melcher has asked that the board waive any outstanding fines.

“It’s going to take a long time to get that yard cleaned up,” Sager said.

Melcher could not be immediately reached for comment.
