GRUNDY CENTER – As of the beginning of this week, the newly-constructed practice gym at the secondary school is officially completed, and is already being put to use.
According to Superintendent Jerry Schutz, the school received approval for occupancy from the State Fire Marshal last week, and the gym was used during the first part of the week for junior high and high school volleyball camp.
“I think everyone’s really excited about this new facility,” Schutz said. “We definitely needed more gym space, and this is going to serve us well for many years. It’s well constructed, and it’s on time and on budget.”
The new gym features regulation basketball and volleyball at main court with retractable bleachers capable of seating 300 spectators; cross courts for volleyball and practice basketball with one row of retractable seating; two volleyball nets; six retractable basketball backstops; two batting cages; wall mats; and two scoreboards.
Schutz said that workers are still finishing up on minor touches outside the gym, such as landscaping, but that everything inside the gym is completed, and ready to go.
Though the school hasn’t set any concrete plans for an open house so far, Schutz said there will likely be a small ribbon-cutting ceremony sometime around the start of the school year – possibly the day of the first football game – though details are not yet known.
