NEW HARTFORD – Two longtime law enforcement officers – Matt Harris and Tyler Brownell – are bringing an exciting new business to New Hartford: High Velocity Canine LLC, a training center for law enforcement dogs.

Both Harris and Brownell have spent an extensive amount of time working with, and training, law enforcement dogs over the years.

Harris lives in Waverly and has worked for the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Department for the last 20 years; Brownell, who lives in Waterloo, is an Army veteran who served in the National Guard for 12 years and worked for the Waterloo Police Department for the last nine years before his recent retirement.

It was their love for dogs that led the two longtime friends and colleagues to start their own business training law enforcement K-9s.

“I really enjoy working with dogs,” Harris said. “They’re very loyal and intelligent creatures, and it’s amazing what you can teach them to do. They have such a high willingness to work. And they teach me, too; I learn something new everyday, so it keeps things interesting.”

Harris began working with law enforcement K-9s back in 2000; his first dog was trained for search and rescue and tracking. After that he worked with a dog trained in narcotics and explosives. Over the years, he continued his training in working with K-9s and eventually received his Master Trainer accreditation from Dogs For Law Enforcement – a nationally recognized organization.

With plenty of knowledge about K-9 training, Harris and Brownell decided to venture out on their own, and begin training K-9s for different agencies that need them.

While looking for a place to start their business, Harris and Brownell stumbled upon a building in New Hartford – 515 Packwaukee Street – that was perfect for their vision.
