New police cell tower nears completion

After months of discussions and preparations, a crew from Tri-State Towers of Marion began work on the new Grundy County police communication tower at the Secondary Roads property last week.

The project cost around $240,000 and is part of a statewide update to police radio systems. Sheriff Rick Penning repeatedly lobbied the board of supervisors to support the endeavor financially, and, along with county engineer Gary Mauer, he watched the tower go up from a front row seat a few hundred feet away.

“It’ll put us on 700 mhz trunking, which the state is going to,” Penning said. “It will be a centralized location and will increase the antennae height for several channels.”
