The Rhythm of Learning: Local music teacher brings new tools to the classroom

GRUNDY CENTER – Geselle Steenhoek, Grundy Center Elementary Music Teacher, has a different approach to teaching music.
Unlike a typical classroom, the students lead in the learning.
“The students really create their own sound,” Steenhoek said. “They learn music through play, movement, and improvisation.”
Steenhoek says her goal is to highlight the interactive aspects of music; to show them that music is like a conversation, or a question and answer, while teaching them teamwork and collaboration.
One of Steenhoek’s most successful tools for teaching is one that’s not found in every classroom.
It’s an interactive whiteboard, which she was able to purchase with the help of a grant from the Grundy Center Community School Foundation.
“The new projector really increases engagement” Steenhoek said. “It makes doing shared, group exercises a lot easier, and there are so many features that are great for teaching. Even I’m still learning all the things you can do with it.”
