The leaders of a trio of important local organizations addressed the Grundy County board of supervisors during Monday morning’s regular meeting.

North Iowa Juvenile Detention Services Director Sam Hudson explained a new service that allows his employees to transport juveniles who need mental health or medical services to the appropriate destinations, and he was joined by a nurse practitioner who works at the center in Waterloo.

Next up was new Grundy County Memorial Hospital President Adam Scherling, who’s been on the job for around six weeks. He had high praise for both the employees of GCMH and the people of the area that have made the transition as seamless as possible.

“I heard a lot throughout the interview process about how unique the culture and the people here are, and I’m happy to report back that it is different,” he said. “There’s a very high level of standards and expectations.”

Scherling hopes to bolster relationships among employees, community members and government officials, and he will look to develop a strategic three-to-five year plan in the near future. He also touted the strong bond between GCMH and Western Home living communities and the hospital’s ranking as a top 150 employer according to The Des Moines Register.

Supervisor Harlyn Riekena asked Scherling about the future of the vacant long-term care unit, and he replied that it would likely be repurposed, leased out or torn down.
