GRUNDY CENTER – In 1984, a group of boys overcame the ups, downs and hardships to become the first ever 2A Championship football team from Grundy Center.
Now, over 30 years later, the story of their victory will be shared at the Grundy Center Historical Society’s pop-up museum during this year’s Felix Grundy Festival.
Mary Doak, a member of the society, said the group chose to feature the 1984 football team because their championship win left a lasting sense of pride and victory in the community.
“It really was a memorable moment for everyone. In Grundy Center, not unlike other small communities, the community thrives when the sports teams are doing well,” Doak said. “It seems to be a rallying point for doing good, and feeling good about your community, your kids and your school. Sports are a very important aspect of rural America, and in Grundy Center, 1984 was the beginning of a series of championship wins in football, basketball and volleyball.”
The museum – which will be set up inside the west section of the former hardware store on main street – will feature a DVD showing scenes of the championship game, along with commentary from several players and coaches from the team. There will also be photos, newspaper clippings and memorabilia on display.
