A slam dunk season: GC Special Olympians earn medals at state basketball competition

Throughout the school year and throughout their various competitions, athletes with the Grundy Center Special Olympics team have learned, grown, competed and won.

Most recently, members of the Grundy Center Special Olympics team took part in the State Basketball Tournament, where they won two gold medals - among other successes.

In total, four Grundy Center students took part in the competition held in Iowa City in late March. Josie Van Nice was a first place gold medalist in her division; Robbie Bischoff was a first place gold medalist in his division; Jamie Hindman was a third place bronze medalist in his division; and Emily Craig was a fourth place ribbon winner in her division.

Coach Sarah Dier says she’s not just proud of how well the students did in the competition, but she’s proud of how they have grown over the season; learning to work together and recognize not just their own successes, but the successes of others as well.
