HUDSON – In need of a second meet for the week, the Grundy Center boys track and field team swooped down on the Pirate Relays in Hudson and snatched a third outdoor team title this season, winning the meet comfortably on Friday night.

The Spartans racked up 148.5 points, well-clear of runner-up Hudson with 107 points and Aplington-Parkersburg in third with 98.5 points. AGWSR finished eighth with 32.5 points.

With lots of faces back from a team that qualified 11 events at state track last year, Grundy Center has added depth in those events and is already more than filling in for the accomplished seniors that graduated from last season's team.

Grundy Center's calling card has been putting at least two strong individuals in a bevy of events, and Friday was no different, with Grundy Center scoring twice in nine events, including three of the four field events.

The Spartans won a total of six events on Friday – Will Grames won the 200-meter dash, Jensen Clapp won the 400, Derek Ciddio struck gold in the 1,600 and relay teams in the 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley were the first across the line in Hudson.

"Our coaches have been telling us ever since last season that we could contend for a state title," Grames said, "and we've been working hard this offseason into the indoor and outdoor season and we've got high hopes for May."
