CONRAD – The Class 2A No. 3 Grundy Center volleyball team stifled BCLUW's offensive opportunities in a straight-set victory in Conrad on Tuesday.

The Spartans won 25-19, 25-8, 25-18. Grundy Center is now 25-2 overall and 4-0 in the North Iowa Cedar League West. BCLUW falls to 13-10 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

"The first and third set our serve receive was good enough to get good swings, the second set was rough," BCLUW head coach Kristen Garber said. "We've definitely had to make some adjustments lately and it's taken us some time. We weren't at our best at the Dunkerton tourney but last night at Roland-Story we found our groove and were moving well. Everyone's playing aggressive and that's good to see."

The Comets' Easton Swanson was limited to seven kills, with Madison Ubben contributing four kills and Lauren Anderson putting down three kills.

BCLUW was as close as 13-14 in the first set, but a 7-2 run allowed the Spartans to pull away. The second game was all Grundy, jumping out to a 7-1 start and then finishing the set on a 15-2 run.

Grundy Center coach Lori Willis credited aggressive serving with limiting BCLUW's offensive opportunities. The Spartans had eight ace serves, including a stretch of three from setter Sydney Mathews during a 7-0 service run near the end of the second set.

"We want to go after people we think might be weaker passers or just areas where it's harder to get a good pass out of," Willis said. "We made sure we were focusing on where (Swanson) was swinging, and I knew it'd take us one or two times because she has an extremely fast arm but the girls adjusted extremely well."
