State wrestling, Day 1: Arends, Fuller to quarters

DES MOINES – All of the state qualifiers from Grundy Register-area wrestling teams survived the first day of the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Thursday, with heavyweights Chase Arends of Dike-New Hartford and Ryne Fuller of SH-BCLUW winning their first matches of the tournament in the 1A and 2A brackets, respectively.
 
Arends won an 8-4 decision against Mount Ayr's Josh Cox and will wrestle Missouri Valley's in Friday's 1A quarterfinals. That session begins at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
 
Fuller pinned Central Lyon/George-Little Rock's Ross Wiertsema in 0:20 and will wrestle Dubuque Wahlert in Friday's 2A quarterfinals, with the session beginning at 9 a.m.
 
Elsewhere in the 2A bracket, Taylor Kolthoff of SH-BCLUW reached Friday's second-round consolation match after pinning Creston's Kaden Bolton in 5:45 in a first-round consolation match. Kolthoff lost his opening match in a 7-5 decision against Centerville's Nathaniel Genobana.
 
Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center's 182-pounder, Hunter Maitland, lost his first match in a 9-3 decision against Southeast Valley's Kyler Fisher but rebounded with an 8-7 decision against MOC-Floyd Valley's Conner Huss.
 
In 1A, Trey Lashbrook lost his first-round match against Denver's Jacob Moore by a 10-5 decision but won his first-round consolation match by a 4-1 decision against AHSTW's Joel Sampson.
 
Second-round consolations in 2A will follow 2A and 3A quarterfinals in Friday's morning session, with 1A second-round consolations coming at the end of the afternoon session starting at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
