Supervisors approve canvass of midterm election

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the canvass of the midterm elections without any major irregularities or issues during its regular meeting on Tuesday morning.

According to County Auditor Rhonda Deters, nearly 65 percent of registered voters in Grundy County came out to the polls last Tuesday, and it amounted to an increase of about 500 ballots from the last midterm in 2014.

“That’s remarkable for a midterm election,” Supervisor Barb Smith said.

District 4 Supervisor Mark Schildroth won re-election in an uncontested race, and Republican Heidi Nederhoff won an uncontested race to replace Harlyn Riekena, who announced his retirement earlier this year, in District 2.

After the meeting, board chairman Jim Ross and Riekena stayed along with Deters to conduct a manual post-election audit from the governor’s race in Precinct 2 which covers the rural Grundy Center, Ivester and Holland areas. Officially, 276 votes were cast there.
